God and Sinners Reconciled

You know those moments when things that you have heard a million times just click? I had one of those moments last night.

Last night, some friends and I went to the Trans Siberian Orchestra concert in Raleigh.  I have been before and knew the show was going to be amazing.  One of the songs they sang was Hark the Harold Angels Sing, which everyone has heard numerous times in their life.  However, this time I caught something I don’t think I have ever caught before.  One of the lyrics says “God and sinners reconciled.” For me that line is the most important line in the entire song.  Its kinda like “I was blind but now I see” in Amazing Grace.  At the fall, we were separated from God because of our sin.  We were no longer able to commune with God like we once were and a gap was formed.  According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, to reconcile is “to restore to friendship or harmony.”  That is why Christ came to the earth.  Christ came to reconcile the relationship we once had with God.  He came to bridge that gap with His own death and resurrection.  I don’t know why but that lyric blew me away and had me thinking the entire night.  The fact that God wanted us back so much that He would send His own son to die the worst death imaginable.  I have a hard time sometimes just making an effort talking to people to restore friendships.  I can’t imagine not being able to be with something I love as much as God loves us.  He literally couldn’t do it because of our sin and because of how holy He is.  To know that the only thing that will restore that relationship is the blood of your very own son.  That’s devastating even in thought.  At the same time, for me, the sinner, the thought is the most humbling thing I could ever think of.  In all of the craziness that is this season, I hope we can remember the extraordinary lyrics of such a common song.

Hark the herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled”
